Comparison of JPEG Resolutions

Images stored in the JPEG format are in a compressed form that loses some of the resolution of the original bit mapped image. The amount of compression is specified at the time the image is stored. The higher the compression the lower the resolution.

Three version of an image are displayed below. The first is at a high resolution (low compression), the second is at 50% resolution/compression, and the third is at a low resolution (high compression). The file sizes for each image are noted.

            90% JPG (27K) 50% JPG (11K)
